Stone Town: The Cultural Heart
Begin in Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site of labyrinthine alleys, sultans' palaces and bustling bazaars. Highlights include the House of Wonders, the Old Fort, the former slave market memorial (sobering and essential), and the Forodhani Gardens night food market — where seafood skewers and Zanzibar pizza make for one of Africa's great street-food evenings. A guided walking tour brings the carved doors and hidden courtyards to life; half a day is the minimum, a full day is better.
The Spice Farms
Zanzibar grew rich on cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon and vanilla. A spice farm tour is a sensory few hours — crushing lemongrass, tasting jackfruit, watching climbers harvest cloves — and ends with a Swahili lunch. It's the island's most underrated experience and perfect between beach days.
